Chicken Mystery

Every morning, and pretty near all day long, you can hear Handsome Hank crowing his beautiful fully developed "Cock a Doodle Dooooooo". But, lately, there has been another sound coming from the fancy chicken pen. It sounds as though another rooster may be trying out his voice. I was under the impression that I only had the rooster that I had ordered (the rest of the chickens were supposed to be hens.) However, one of my "surprise" chickens may end up being a rooster, also. The suspect is on of the chickens that I call Phyllis. I have five of these white crested chickens. One of them, however is standing much taller and has darker red markings around her/his beak. There is a chance that this particular chicken will be renamed Phillip!

Here are one of the typical "Phyllis" chickens.

And here is Amazon chicken....maybe soon to be called Phillip.

I have two of these feather footed chickens...named Freda
This silver crested Polish is named Izzy....her sister Amelia Airheart took to wing and became prey to an Owl, I suspect.

This golden crested Polish has a sister...and they are both named Ziggy.
This is Babs. She comes to my feet to be picked up and makes the sweetest cooing sound.

And of course.....Esmerelda. And to her left in the background is "Sticky" (the one who messed with the fly tape). There are actually 7 "Sticky" gals in this flock....and I am not sure what breed they are, but they look like a game bird type. They almost don't look like chickens.....

A few more weeks and these gals should begin laying. I can hardly wait to see what type of eggs we get.

- Who's Who....part 5
Years ago, when we decided to have hens for eggs,we made it a point to avoid roosters. We bought our hens as chicks at the feed store. And all were hens. And there was peace on the farm. The next summer, we decided to increase our flock;and ordered 25...

- King Of The Hill
Rod seems to have adapted to living in the barn quite nicely. He has claimed the hayloft as his kingdom and reigns from high atop the hay pile. Each night he climbs high up to his throne... and each morning, stands and crows from his lofty chamber. If...

- Chicken Tales
You might remember last week's post about "pecking order". I had removed dear Babs from the fancy chicken henhouse because she was being picked on. Babs has made the transition to living with the young pullets quite nicely...and all is calm in that...

- Amelia Airheart
Amelia "Airheart" is one of my two black and white Polish Crested chickens. She is quite lovely, with her fine feather hat. For some reason, though, she has developed a funny habit. Each and every evening, she flies up to the top part of the fence around...

I had a few questions regarding my last post and raising chickens. If you are interested in raising chickens, a little research into breeds will tell you what type you prefer. Every different breed has a different egg. There are even chickens who lay...
