Exciting Plans

First I have several field trips planned. Indian Shell Mound Park will not only provide us with an example of an Indian Mound, I have heard the birding is wonderful. We also plan to go to Emerald Mound, which will provide us with better examples and more information about Indian Mounds. Lord Epa's grandmother has also been learning to make arrow heads and we are hoping she will teach us how. She also has an extensive arrow head and pottery collection that we are looking forward to learning more about.

Literature - We are kicking off the unit with The Lost History of Aztec & Maya by Charles Phillips. There are some lovely photographs of artifacts, art works, pyramids, and places scattered throughout the book, along with maps and original documents. This book is going to be a true pleasure to read. After Lord Epa reads the book he will write a myth explaining an act of nature he knows something about, Hurricane Katrina.

American History - I am really pleased with the American History book, History of a Free Nation, I really love the Art History Connection that has famous painting scattered throughout the book for Lord Epa and I to enjoy. Here are some of the books we are going to read for additional information and enjoyment.
  1. Chronicle of America: From Prehistory to Today
  2. The Prince by Nicolò Machiavelli
  3. The American Heritage Book of Indians by William Brandon
  4. The Crusades by Malcolm Billings

In Sociology we will be reading The Russians by Hedrick Smith.

I'll post pictures after our field trips and time permitting I'll do book reviews on the books. The beginning of the year is always an exciting time for us as we embark on our newest educational adventure.

- Getting Ready For The 2007-2008 School Year
I like to plan and organize so I am already gearing up for next year. Since I am not using a textbook for American Literature, I am concentrating on it first as it will take the most time. First I created a table of contents for books we are going to...

- American Literature ~civil War Unit
A Taste of Freedom by Tommie Thompson. I am rather disappointed in the book. To me the reading level is 4th grade, but due to the content I wouldn't introduce it until at least Junior High. I have been in two mind about using it as the reading level...

- American Literature
Since I couldn't find an American Literature book I was happy with, I am going to devise my own for Lord Epa to use next year. Here is your chance to chime in with the American author you think MUST be included. Here is a partial list of what I have...
