Stupid comments of public school jingoist

Lately I have read with amusement the comments on some blogs by non-homeschoolers bashing homeschooling. You would think if they were going to comment on another parents educational choice they would at least take the time to find out something about homeschooling instead of making ignorant statements. Here are the most offensive and annoying statements these morons make.

  1. Only Fundamentalist Christians homeschool -FALSE, many people choose to homeschool because they feel it is the best educational choice for their children. Pagans, Atheist, Free-Thinking Christians are all represented in the homeschooling community.

  2. Homeschoolers don't teach evolution - FALSE, many homeschoolers do teach evolution.

  3. You have to have a teaching certificate in order to teach. - FALSE, do you have to have a cooking certificate in order to cook for your family? do you have to have a degree in horticulture in order to have a garden?

  4. Homeschool Moms are forced to provide unpaid labor for their families - Homeschooling is a choice, do some parents feel pressured to homeschool by their family, friends or church? maybe. But for the majority of homeschooling parents it was a decision they made in the best interest of their family. Sometimes it's the Dad's that are providing the unpaid labor often both parents are involved in homeschooling to some extent. Homeschooling is not a new way to enslave women as some feminist would have you believe.

  5. Homeschoolers are elitist - If by that you mean we want the best for our children TRUE. It never ceases to amaze me the number of people who maintain that parents should leave their children in unsatisfactory public schools for "the greater good". If a parent was unfortunate enough to have a sick child no one would slam them for seeking the best medical care they could afford for their child, but these same people slam homeschoolers for wanting the best education for their child. They have some idiotic idea that just because the Smiths don't have enough money/time to homeschool the Jones shouldn't be allowed to.

  6. Homeschoolers are all Republicans - False, just like homeschoolers come from diverse religious backgrounds they also come from diverse political backgrounds.

  7. Homeschoolers are social misfits - FALSE

Perhaps the most irritating thing of all about the public school jingoist is while they think it is perfectly OK to criticize homeschoolers, call for increased regulations or outright banning of homeschooling and imply that homeschool parents are child abusers, they react with outrage IF a homeschooler points out anything negative about the public schools. Public schools that homeschoolers pay taxes to support. According to them the problems with the public schools are off limits. But why do they think my decision to homeschool is any of THEIR BUSINESS? Homeschoolers do not receive tax breaks or tax money (at least they don't in Mississippi). Like parents who choose to send their children to private schools we have merely chosen a different educational alternative to public schools, so why do public school parents think homeschoolers should justify their choice to them? Could it be because they feel guilty about sending their children to failing public schools? After all they seem more intent on solving the perceived problems of homeschooling then correcting the real problems in their children's public schools.
