Alasandra's Book Club ~ The Subtle Knife
I love the second book in Philip Pullman's Dark Materials trilogy.
Will has been taking care of his Mother since he was seven years old. When some mysterious men show up at his house demanding his Father's papers Will takes his Mother to stay with his piano teacher, finds the letters and winds up walking through a window into another world where he meets Lyra. Together they set off to find his Father.
Lee Scoresby sets out to help Lyra anyway he can. Believing that finding Grumman will aid Lyra he sets out to find him. And I love it when Lee says "
Seems to me the place you fight cruelty is where you find it, and the place you give help is where you see it needed.". Unfortunately Grumman (aka Will's Father, John Parry) breaks his word to Lee, to make sure that Lyra is kept safe, and sends Will to help Lord Asriel.
We discover that what Lyra calls Dust is Angels (aka Watchers or Bene elim). We also discover that the witches call Lyra, EVE.
We also find that Lord Asriel (Lucifer) is preparing for a war against the authority (God).
Another new addition is Dr. Mary Malone a scientist who studies dust and was once a nun. The dust informs her she must play the Serpent to Lyra's Eve.
The book ends with Will being taken by the Angels to Lord Asriel, Lyra missing and the witches that were with the children overcome by Specters.
