Leaving The Nest

Sooner or later,
every youngster must leave the nest
and venture out into the world.

Sometimes it is a smooth transition.
And sometimes it is a bit harrowing.

Yesterday afternoon this little fellow
was trying out his wings for the first time.
He  left his nest up in the maple tree beside the barn,
and clumsily landed atop our rain barrels...
amidst dogs, cats, horses and ponies.
Ooooh, what a world this is!
And how scary to be out here all alone!
Meanwhile, his parents were quite upset,
causing quite a ruckus.

We locked the cats in the barn and shooed the dogs away.
But, several times later in the day we saw him
around the barn, trying his best to fly.
I have never seen a baby have so much trouble.
I think he might be a "special needs" robin.

Meanwhile, in the turkey pen,
my poults left their "nest" for the first time
and ventured out into their world.

Curious...

Then, slowly....

One ventured out....

The next one followed....

And finally, they were all out....

exploring their enclosed yard and munching on grass...

It can be a scary world out there...
so it is always best to venture out with a friend or two!

PS:  I think we have at least one Tom turkey.  One of these little guys is much
larger than the others.  One is much smaller and one in between.
So....one Tom, one Tina, and one (androgynous) Terry.
Time will tell.

It never ceases to amaze me how comfortable our barn kitties are with life around the barn.I often see them wandering around through horses' legs...completely unafraid. Example...Here is TomTom, lounging in the dry lot, just feet away fromseveral...

- A Snowy Day...pondering The Sixth Sense
There is nothing like fresh fallen snow to liven up the dull, gray winter landscape! Two inches fell yesterday. It greeted us early in the morning as we were heading to the barn... And while it was falling,  many stayed indoors... Weather doesn't...

- Guinea Graduation
[Imagine, if you will, the familiar notes of "Pomp and Circumstance" in the background...that is, if you can hear it over all the guinea ruckus!] The place:  Bee Haven Acres' Birdbrain AcademyThe time:  6:00 PM Saturday eveningThe event:...

- Bird Dilemma
Yesterday as I was driving the lawn tractor through the apple orchard, my eyes caught a glimpse of something moving in the grass. As I turned off the mower and approached it, its little mouth opened, revealing a bright yellow orange throat...hungrily...

- Motherhood
Happy Mother's Day from Bee Haven Acres! We found this nest high in the scaffolding outside our second story. The mother robin flew off as I leaned out the window to take the picture. But like us....she does not let her brood out of her sight, and...
