The New York Times article A Vital Discussion, Clouded discusses how the HPV vaccine issue is being clouded by misinformation.
Worries about promiscuity have clouded the discussion about the cervical cancer vaccine that was approved last year for girls and young women, and that some states want to require for schoolgirls. Cervical cancer is caused by a sexually transmitted virus, and the message from some quarters is that a decent young woman shouldn’t need this vaccine.
The article Furor on Rush to Require Cervical Cancer Vaccine explains that part of the problem was the rush to require the vaccine.
Opponents of mandatory inoculation include anti-vaccine activists, who argue that the vaccine has not been tested in enough young girls and who have listed various side effects reported among users, which have included dizziness, nausea and fever. Others include conservative Christian groups who oppose mandatory H.P.V. vaccination on moral grounds, and those who are generally distrustful of the pharmaceutical industry.
