Alasandra's Book Club ~ Riding Lessons by Sara Gruen
At 18 Annemarie has the world by a string, she has the boyfriend (Roger), the perfect horse Highland Harry (A Brindled Chestnut) and a shot at the Olympics until Harry's shattered pastern ends it all. Harry is put down and Annemarie is left with a broken neck. After months in ICU, numerous surgeries and therapy she walks down the aisle in July to wed Roger. But she never rides again.
20 years later she has a rebellious teenage daughter, a successful husband and an exciting career until all in one day she gets fired, her husband announces he is moving in with the intern Sonja (who is young enough to be his daughter), and she discovers her Father has ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). At this point I would have a nervous breakdown but Annemarie packs her bags and takes her teenage daughter home with her so she can run her family's stable.
She reconnects with an old boyfriend (Dan, who happens to be the family vet). Dan runs a horse rescue (he saves horses from slaughter) and he happens upon another Brindled Chestnut that looks remarkably like Harry. The horse turns out the be Harry's brother Highland Hurrah, whose previous owner tried to kill him for the insurance. When Annemarie proves Hurrah's identity he is taken away from her by the authorities. Will she get him back? (you'll have to read the book to find out).
