Pet Food Recall Survey ~ Will It Be Accurate?

A Michigan State University veterinary professor is launching a survey to better estimate how many cats and dogs died after eating tainted food and what, specifically, killed them.
Federal officials have not said how many animals have died. More than 100 brands of pet food have been recalled because of contamination since March 16, when Menu Foods, citing the deaths of 10 cats and dogs, announced a North American pet food recall.

The survey asks U.S. and Canadian veterinarians and lab workers 17 questions, such as what food a dog or cat ate, the animal's age and breed and how the pet's illness was diagnosed.

I wonder how accurate the survey will be. Whiskers died March 9, 2007 a week before the recall. My veterinarian didn't have a clue what Whiskers ate. I wonder how many veterinarians keep records of what pets are feed by their owners?

So here is the info in case someone care. Whiskers was 10, he was a Hemingway Cat, he was a very healthy and active cat (he still played like a kitten with Socks), until the last week of his life. He ate Special Kitty Pouch Cat Food. I took him for his annual shots March 5th, other then a seasonal allergy he was fine. By Wednesday he was very sick, the veterinarian assumed the reason he wasn't eating was a upper respiratory infection as his snotty nose had gotten worse. They put him on fluids until they could get him to eat. They asked me to bring some of his favourite cat food up there (I brought the Special Kitty Pouch Cat Food). Thursday afternoon they got him to eat and sent him home. By Thursday night he was much worse wouldn't eat or drink and couldn't get comfortable. We took him back up there. They did a kidney function test. He had lost 75% of his kidney function. They recommended he be put to sleep. We lost our beloved Whiskers March 9, 2007.

March 16th we read about the pet food recall and to our horror his pet food was on the list of recalled foods. My beautiful healthy Whiskers died because I feed him the 'wrong' food. Food that was deliberately contaminated with melamine in order to make a profit.
