Whiskers died March 9th, 2007 of kidney failure after eating Special Kitty Pouch cat food.

From CBS News

An unknown number of cats and dogs had suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, veterinarian and CBS News correspondent Dr. Debbye Turner reports.

Our beloved Whiskers is among the dead.

Turner reports that the FDA said Monday it is focusing its investigation on a new supplier of wheat gluten, which Menu Foods began using around the time the first complaints surfaced. But it could be weeks before pet owners have answers.

Tests of suspect pet food killed 7, FDA says

As many as one in six animals died in tests of suspect dog and cat food by the manufacturer after complaints the products were poisoning pets around the country, the government said Monday.

Menu Foods told the FDA it received the first complaints of kidney failure and deaths among cats and dogs from pet owners on Feb. 20

Why didn't they issue a recall sooner. Whiskers would still be alive IF they had gotten the word out sooner, instead of doing the testing first. Whiskers was still OK Feb. 24th. I will never forgive them for waiting to get the word out.

It began new tests on Feb. 27. During those tests, the company fed its product to 40 to 50 dogs and cats and seven animals — the mix of species was not immediately known — died, Sundlof said. The contamination appeared more deadly to cats than to dogs, he said.

The FDA has yet to tally how many reports it has received of cats and dogs suffering kidney failure or death. The company has reported 10 deaths, of nine cats and a single dog, but Sundlof told reporters on Monday that he expects the number of pet deaths to increase as the agency probes the cause of tainted pet food.

I reported Whiskers' death to the FDA. If you have a pet who has suffered an adverse reaction after eating one of the pet foods listed please contact the FDA.

We are taking Sockie-Pooh to the vet today to have his kidney function tested. He never cared much for the pouch cat food. He probably ate an oz. of it if that and left the rest of his supper for Whiskers, so we are hopeful that he will be OK. We gave them dried cat food for breakfast and Sockie-Pooh seemed to prefer it. After Whiskers died we stopped giving Sockie-Pooh pouch food for supper because so much was wasted, and he seemed perfectly happy with the dried cat food. Hopefully this saved his life.
