Winter Egg Production

I have read a few articles with opinions on how to keep up
winter egg production.
Most suggest using a light inside the henhouse to
counteract the shortened days.

I have also read that leaving a light on all night
stresses the hens.

Our solution has been to use an infra red heat lamp
in each of the henhouses.
This helps to keep the houses warmer,
and seems to keep egg production at a good rate.

Our hens and roosters seem to make it through the winter
happy and healthy.

The dogs love the chicken yard,
and always find something yummy there.

Today it was ice chunks...

And speaking of happy and healthy.....

Have a wonderful weekend.
We will see you back on Monday with more Tales from the Farm.

- The Egg-less Chicken Days Of Summer
The girls are on strike! It's that time of year again...egg production is suffering. Where we used to pick up 4 or 5 or even 6 dozen eggs a day,we are lucky now to even find two dozen. Why this drop in production? Heat may be the answer... as...

- Mystery Solved
There are days when "tales" take place in a moment and I am lucky enough to have my camera ready to capture the moment. And then there are tales that unfold over a number of months.Today's tale is one that began last summer. It is a tale that...

- Too Many Shades Of Gray!
It's that time of year when days pass, seemingly unending... with no sunshine. Endless days of gray....cloudy skies, snow flurries, cold... from sun-up 'til sun-down. Upon awakening, my eyes are greeted by the gray light of morning...no longer...

- The Saga Of Roy Boy
There's a newcomer in the upper chicken yard. Can you tell who it is?Yes, you are so right...it's Roy Boy! It seems that we had a happy accident on Sunday morning. Roy Boy, as you might remember, had been sleeping on top of the henhouse by the...

- Elvis Is Singing A New Song
Here's Elvis, out with his gals and he's singing a new song! "It's now or never......" he croons. Elvis is as concerned as I am about our hens' dwindling egg production. Ever since that dog attack several weeks ago, production has been...
