CSX Railroad Starts Fire

Pascagoula acting Battalion Chief Terry Eiland said railroad workers were burning grass on the railroad right-of-way through Pascagoula when one of their burns located near Hospital Road got out of hand because of the wind. "Their truck was not big enough to handle it when it got out of hand," said Eiland, which forced the Pascagoula Fire Department to respond. Despite city ordinances requiring anyone burning trash, grass or anything else to obtain a burn permit in order to notify the fire department of any burns, Eiland said Pascagoula was unaware the railroad was planning to burn along the tracks until they received calls of grass fires.

Apparently the CSX railroad thinks they don't have to obey the laws ordinary people do. I certainly don't want them in my community.

In Ocean Springs, work along the railroad tracks resulted in two fires involving railroad cross ties. "They were grinding down the tracks," said Lt. Cristus Medley of the Ocean Springs Fire Department. The grinding caused the ties to catch fire.

Apparently railroads are a fire hazard.
