Financial Literacy Program
Mississippi philanthropist and Netscape ex-CEO Jim Barksdale on Wednesday announced a financial literacy program for the state's public schools. The James L. Barksdale Financial Literary Program will allow K-12 educators interested in teaching financial literacy - making good money decisions - to be trained for nine months by the Mississippi Council on Economic Education. National Security Language Initiative
In January, President Bush announced the National Security Language Initiative, an effort to increase the number of Americans who speak critical foreign languages such as Chinese and Arabic. The U.S. Department of Education last month awarded $12.9 million in grants for foreign language programs to districts - including Broward and Miami-Dade - in 22 states. The demand, he said, has come "from middle class families, our defense and intelligence communities and from business leaders who see some knowledge of Chinese language and culture as a key commercial benefit." Levine said the challenge will be finding enough qualified teachers; the Chinese government already is sending teachers to the United States to fill some of the demand.
