Socialization in Public Schools

Those of you who read my blog regularly know about the Bay High Brawls, in reference to that this was in the soundoff today

Fighting won't stop
• To all the people talking bad about the fights at Bay High: I am a Bay High student and I do not appreciate what y'all are saying about my school. Y'all are worse than Hancock. Y'all just need to keep your mouths shut if y'all don't have your facts straight. The fighting has nothing to do with "being cool" or "rap music." Nothing to do with it. Our faculty and administration are excellent so shut up about that. They have nothing to do with the fights. Y'all don't even know the half of it. We're just tired of people trying to act stuck-up and always talking about people behind their backs. Bay High is just like every other school. We're not gonna stop fighting. We're not gonna listen to a damn thing y'all say. So DEAL WITH IT!!

I wonder what Dr. Phil thinks of that statement. I also wonder what Maureen who posted this on the board would think of the above statement.
I have heard and read much about parents who homeschool to protect their children from violence. I can see the knee jerk logic in this and understand wanting to protect you child from any negative or dangerous action. The one thing I do not think we have heard enough about is the violence being done by homeschoolers or former homeschoolers who do not or have not learned about social acceptable behavior.
We have all heard much about the poor Amish school girls who were shot and killed, but have we heard about the killer who was a home schooled child? Did he learn how to vent his anger and react appropriately? There was also a young man in Lancaster County who killed his girlfriends parents this year, he was homeschooled. That is two homeschool students in Lancaster PA who killed. I am not saying that homeschool children are more prone to violence, I think people are violent learning how to deal with problems in a socially acceptable way might not be as easily or readily learned in a homeschooled environment. and that being in a public school, you may have to learn how to work your anger in a better way.
Maureen

I also wonder how she explains Columbine and Pearl High School, where public school students choose to shoot their fellow classmates, because of all the anger attending public school provoked.

Then there is this letter that appeared in Dear Abby today.

Dear Abby: I'm a 13-year-old girl in the eighth grade. I get treated like a slut every day. Boys keep coming up to me asking me to have sex with them and be their little slave girl. I say no, but they won't stop! About five months ago I almost committed suicide. I try to ignore them, really I do. Abby, could you please help me? Please! Not a Slut in S. Carolina

Dear Not: There's a name for what these boys are doing - sexual harassment. It is very important that you tell a teacher what has been going on because by law, the school administration can - and must - put a stop to it. These boys think they are being sophisticated, clever and funny when in reality they are none of the above. They need to be punished. And you, my dear, may need professional counseling to get over the trauma and depression their foolishness has caused. Please clip this
and show it to your parents and the teacher you confide in. Your problem is serious and needs to be dealt with immediately.

Does Dr. Phil really think our 13 year olds need to learn to deal with sexual harassment firsthand? Where are this girls teachers? Why hasn't someone in the school system with all their training realized how depressed and unhappy she is?

Public schools are not the answer to all of society's ills as some of the posters on Dr. Phil maintained. Parents have the right to provide their children with the best academic education possible in the safest environment, even if that means homeschooling.
